HO: 1880 Wood Open Platform Coach
Con Cor
Passenger service in the 1800s looked very different from what would come a century later. Most travelers didn't go very far. On longer runs, trains stopped at railroad-owned restaurants and hotels for food service and overnight stays. Paying passengers had little reason to move between coaches so open platforms on the ends of the cars weren't a problem.

HO: 1880s Wood Open Platform Baggage RPO #212
Con Cor
Railway Post Office service began in 1862 in Illinois with connections to Pony Express. Around the same time Congress proclaimed all railroads as Post Roads and RPO service quickly spread around the country. Until the post WWI years, RPO service was the only practical way to move intercity mail. Cars were equipped with sorting bins and staffed by Post Office personnel. see details
