To pave the way for the iron horse, it took men with wills of steel. The leader (Sterling Hayden) of the rival Canyon City & San Juan line aims to claim the route through intimidation, vandalism, and murder. He and his whiskeyed-up men are looking for a fight...and they find a war. Because the hardnosed D&RG rail boss (Edmond O'Brien) knows a lot more than how to build and run a railroad.
